Elevating HBCU’s to prominence, excellence, and respect is a daunting task. However, it is a duty alumni must accept, otherwise our schools will falter. As this year’s theme suggests, alumni must come together to accomplish our goals.
This year’s theme was inspired by the Sankofa bird, which is a mythical bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. The literal translation of Sankofa is “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.” As alumni of HBCU’s, we must “go back and fetch” our alumni and let them know they are not forgotten; they are NEEDED. Active alumni must “pull” inactive alumni into action as well as “pull” close, locking arms if necessary, and work together. The more alumni there are actively working together, the easier it will be to “push” our agenda to promote HBCU’s.
