On behalf of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association, we would salute the alumni that were honored during the 40th Anniversary Scholarship Dinner. Since the formation of this consortium group in 1975, our alumni have excelled in the community, due in large part to the exceptional education they received at their respective Historically Black College or University.
The Scholarship Dinner recognized alumni that have brought honor to their alma mater in the community and acknowledge our scholarship recipients that began their matriculation at an HBCU in the fall semester 2015. |

These alumni have made outstanding achievement in their professional, civic or community activities; and have provided distinguished service to their alma mater in the Greater Cleveland community.
Ernest Bizzell
Alabama A&M University A 1968 graduate of Alabama A&M University, Ernest Bizzell spent close to 40 years as an engineer and designer for AT&T. Showing a love and passion for his alma mater Mr. Bizzell has served as President of the Cleveland Chapter of the Alabama A&M Alumni Association. 
Rev. David Hunter
Alcorn State University The pastor of Bright Star Missionary Church graduated from Alcorn State University in 1964. In his more than 50 year career in Rev. Hunter has sat on numerous boards and continues his efforts to improve life for Clevelanders. Rev. Hunter is currently the President of the Cleveland Alcorn State University Alumni Association. 
Anthony H. Brown
Bethune-Cookman University The President of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association, Anthony H. Brown has been an avid supporter of HBCU’s through his service to the UNCF and his alma mater. Mr. Brown, an educator with Cleveland Metropolitan Schools is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He is an accomplished artist having performed in several stage plays, films and musicals performances. 
Constance L. Harper
Posthumously Central State University This 1958 graduate of Central State University was a pillar in the Cleveland community who served as the publisher of the Call and Post newspaper for nearly two decades. In her illustrious career, Ms. Harper was honored by numerous organizations for her professional and philanthropic works including the YMCA Woman of Achievement Award, Trailblazer Award from the 100 Black Men of Cleveland and induction in the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame. Ms. Harper was also a prominent member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. 
Tosha Hudson
Hampton University Tosha Hudson is a proud product of Hampton University who graduated with a B.A. in Physics in 1997. She is currently employed as a laboratory manager at MISCO Refractometer in Cleveland. Tosha serves as both the President of the Cleveland and Midwest Chapters of the Hampton Alumni Association. She also is very active in the with the finance and youth ministries at Faith Tabernacle United Holy Church. 
Beverly Gardner
Jackson State University A proud graduate of JSU serving as the local chapter president for many years. Beverly was an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and longstanding member of the Council. Lytle Davis

Justin Horton
Morehouse College A graduate of Morehouse College with a degree in Finance, Justin Houston is a founder and partner with Stratos Wealth Partners , a financial service and wealth advisory firm. He is a board member of the Cleveland Zoological Society and co-chairman of the Cleveland Foundation's African-American Philanthropy Committee. 
Paul Hardy
North Carolina A&T State University Paul Hardy is the President of the Cleveland Chapter of the North Carolina A&T Alumni Association. Mr. Hardy earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1977 and has worked as a Senior Manager at Goodyear for 37 years. Mr. Hardy is also the chair of the United Way Dorothy O. Jackson Society and has received numerous awards for his service within that organization. 
Rev. Hilton O. Smith
Saint Augustine's University Inducted into the UNCF Hall of Honor, the Rev. Hilton O. Smith has been a leader in business and civil rights for five decades. Rev. Smith, who earned his degree in Sociology/Political Science is a Senior Vice President at Turner Construction. He sits on several boards including University Hospitals Health System and the National Association of Minority Contractors. Rev. Smith is also the Associate Pastor of Greater Abyssinia Church and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 
Carolyn Grimes
Tennessee State University Carolyn is a 1968 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.A. degree in elementary education. She is a retired educator/administrator of the Cleveland Schools. She is the immediate past president of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges and chooses to worship at the Greater Abysssinia Baptist Church. Carolyn is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Omega Chapter. Arvell Toles

Tillie Colter
University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff One of the founding members of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association , Tillie Coulter, a 1966 graduate of Arkansas Pine Bluff has had an illustrious career as a music educator and performer. She has served as the director of the Cleveland NPHC Choir since it’s inception and still teaches in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. She is also a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. |
Reba Denmark
Alabama State University A lifelong educator, Reba Denmark is a proud graduate of Alabama State University; she has led her local Alumni chapter as president for the past two terms. Mrs. Denmark is a Silver Star member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Reba also is an active member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Incorporated and the United Methodist Women at St. Paul United Methodist Church; she has held many offices, including president, during her tenure in both organizations. 
E. Ruth Wesby (Posthumously)
Bennett College A “Belle” through and through, E. Ruth Wesby dedicated her life to serving others through education as she taught in the Cleveland Metropolitan District for more than 25 years. Mrs. Wesby was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill and the Bennett Alumnae Association. 
Rev. Dr. E. Theophilus Caviness
The Former Bishop College For more than 54 years, the Rev. Dr. E. Theophilus Caviness has preached the gospel at Greater Abyssinia Church in Cleveland. The Bishop College graduate is also the head of the Cleveland Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and is enshrined in the Civil Rights Walk of Fame. 
Brandon Agnew
Fisk University The President of the Cleveland Chapter of the Fisk University Alumni Association is a young professional on the rise who currently works in the Educational Services Department of Cuyahoga County. Mr. Agnew graduated with a degree in Business Management in 2004 and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The young Fisk alum proudly attends Mt. Zion Church of Oakwood Village. 
Rev. Paul Sadler, Sr.
Howard University A 1983 graduate of Howard University, the Rev. Paul Sadler has served as the Pastor of Mount Zion Congregational Church for the past 13 years. In addition to his contributions in ministry , Rev. Sadler is a published author who wrote the book “52 Ways to Reignite your Congregation” and actor who serves on numerous boards and commissions. 
Carolyn Bridges-Graves
Johnson C. Smith University A lifelong educator and former elementary school principal, the 1968 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University was the original secretary of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association. Through the years, she has been recognized as a “Shining Star” by Greater Abyssinia Church and is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. 
Roscoe Rush
Lincoln University (MO) A 1960 graduate of Lincoln University (MO) Roscoe Rush is a successful technology businessman who is also the President of the Cleveland Chapter of the Lincoln (MO) Alumni Association. Mr. Rush graduated with a B.S. in Secondary Education/Math. 
Lula Adams
Mississippi Valley State University Lula Adams, a 1969 graduate of Mississippi Valley State University, has accolades from both her service as a social worker and her business experience in the private sector. She was recognized by the Hough Health Center for her superb work. She later served as a manager of Adam Trucking Company. Ms. Adams is a proud booster of the Solon Schools and is the President of the Order of Eastern Stars and sits on the board of the Lexington Bell Community Center. 
James L. Avery
North Carolina Central University A decorated social worker with more than 29 years of service to those in need in Cuyahoga County, James Avery used the degree he earned from North Carolina Central University to help many people. Mr. Avery, is still active in helping others in his capacity as service coordinator for Alpha Phi Alpha Homes, Inc. and a member of the fraternity. Mr. Avery is also a referee for high school basketball and umpire for baseball. 
Jama R. Haynes
Spelman College A 1985 graduate of Spelman College with a degree in Economics, Jama Haynes is the Chief Financial Officer of Faith Community Credit Union in Cleveland. Ms. Haynes, a member of the Black MBA Association is also the President of the Cleveland Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College. 
Laquita M. Taylor
Tougaloo College An administrative hearing officer with Cuyahoga County Job and Family Services, Laquita M, Taylor earned her BA in Economics/Business Administration from Tugaloo College and a MBA from Jackson State University. Mrs. Taylor proudly serves as both the Treasurer for the Ohio Alumni Association of Tougaloo College and National Council of Negro Women, Western Reserve Section. 
Lester Holmes
Wilberforce University Lester Holmes, a 1999 graduate of Wilberforce University is the recording secretary of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association and Chairman of the HBCU College Fair. Mr. Holmes, a former reporter with the Associated Newspapers of Michigan is now an employee of Cuyahoga County. He is also an Executive Board member of the Delta Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Heart of Steel. |
